On 3 July 1962, one of the arguably greatest actors of all time was born, Thomas Cruise Mapother IV. Born in Syracuse, New York, he was the son of Mary Lee and Thomas Cruise Mapother III. Cruise's mother was an amateur actress and a school teacher. His father was an electrical engineer. Cruise's parents got divorced when he was eleven. He decided to be an actor when he was just four years old. Through difficulties in school, having dyslexia, having an abusive father, and frequent moving between states, Cruise let nothing get in the way of what he wanted to do for the rest of his life.

The first show Cruise ever did was at age 14 where he was persuaded by friends to join the school musical. After this performance, it did take him long to follow the path to stardom. Cruise next found himself moving back to New York and auditioning for movie roles. With a slow start, Cruise kept heavy hopes and landed his first appearance in the movie named Endless Love (1981).

Once word spread about his potential, Cruise had played in movies that were the highest grossing films at the time. More success leads to a bigger name and a bigger name he had. Tom Cruise soon found himself being nominated for an academy award for Born on the Fourth of July (1990); a film for which he won a Golden Globe for best actor.

For over thirty years, Tom Cruise has been an actor. It all began with Risky Business (1983); his first leading role. Cruise then starred in some of the highest grossing films of the 1980s: Top Gun (1986), about macho US fighter pilots which co-starred Kelly McGillis and Val Kilmer; The Color of Money (1986) which was directed by Martin Scorsee and co-starring Paul Neyman; Rain Maker (1988) which won four academy awards; and Born on the Fourth of July (1989) for which Cruise received an Oscar nominations.

By the 1990s, Cruise was one of the highest paid actors in the world. He averaged about $15,000,000 per film. Although he is a very good actor, he is so self-conscious about his height that he actually makes directors shoot him from a low angle shot.

In 2001, Cruise divorced the actress Nicole Kidman whom he had married in 1990. Previously, he had been married to actress Mimi Rogers. Cruise was extremely affected by his divorce from Kidman. In fact, he became very upset with a reporter for simply asking him about it. He told the reporter to mind his own business and that he was stepping out of line by merely asking him how he felt about his divorce. Even after the divorce, Cruise still spent much time in Kidman's home country of Australia. During the period of divorce and remarriage, Cruise never stopped making movies.

Shortly after his divorce from Kidman. Cruise rebounded and scored big in the box office with Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds (2005) which made more than $190,000,000.

Cruise found love once again with Katie Holmes whom he married in November 2006. Together they had their first born child, a little girl named Suri in April 2006. It was only a short five year marriage when the couple announced that they were getting a divorce because of his involvement with the Church of scientology.

Scientology is based on finding self through spiritual fulfillment through training and study. Cruise is super involved in his religion. He actually made a reporter go through a full four hour tour of his church and what his beliefs were about before he would agree to do an interview. Scientology was founded by a fiction writer, L. Ron Hubbard. Cruised claimed Scientology cured his dyslexia.

Apart from being an actor, Cruise stays pretty busy. He is highly involved with his church and makes many donations to its cause. He loves being a father. He takes his kids rock climbing, which is one of his favorite hobbies. He also loves being a pilot and has many thrilling tales of things that happened to him while in the air. However, his favorite past time relates back to his job which he loves so much. Cruise watches at least one to two movies every single day.

No one can belittle Tom Cruise's success. Even his bad movies can rake in close to $250,000,000. When asked about his life, Tom simply said, "I feel privileged, that's how I feel."
