John Singleton is best known for his movies Boyz n the Hood (1991) and 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003). Singleton was born on 6 January 1968 in Los Anglos, California. While he was in college, he taught an advanced directing class. Growing up, his father was a mortgage banker and his mother was a sales executive. They were married but eventually split up leaving Singleton with his mother on the weekdays and his father on the weekends. He liked film at a young age and began writing screenplays in high school.

Singleton attended a film-writing program at the University of Southern California after high school. While attending USC he won three film related awards from the university. That led him on to a contract with the Creative Arts Agency. Columbia Pictures purchased his script for Boyz n the Hood .

Boyz n the Hood was based on his own experiences while growing up in Los Angeles and a statistic he once heard that one out of every 22 African Americans will be murdered in the streets of Los Angeles growing up. At the age of 24, Singleton was the youngest person ever to be nominated for an academy award for Best Director. He was the first African American ever to be nominated for this award.

Singleton started Ice Cubes' acting career by having him as one of the lead roles in the Boyz n the Hood. Singleton met Ice Cube at one of his jobs while in college. The movie reviewed a lot of criticism as you can only imagine. Most of it was on how he showed the harsh living conditions of the men in the movie.

On 22 July 2005, the movie Hustle & Flow (2005) was released. This would not have been possible though, without the determination of John Singleton. After he read the script, written by Craig Brewer, Singleton instantly knew that the film must be made. Time after time, Singleton and Brewer were denied budgeting by major production companies. So, Singleton took it into his own hands to produce the film and budget the film with his own money.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Singleton gave the film a budget of $5,000,000. Once the film was done with production, which was produced by John Singleton and Stephanie Allain, they entered the film into the Sundance Film Festival, where it amazingly got the attention of all of those production companies that didn't want anything to do with it a year before. The film was such a hit that it started a bidding war among all of these production companies. Singleton eventually decided to sell the film to Paramount Films for $9,000,000 and a budget of $3,500,000 each for two different independent films. After the film was released in box offices, it grossed over $22,000,000 in the United States. The film later went on to receive some awards, such as an Academy Award for best original song for Three 6 Mifia's song It's Hard out Here for a Pimp.

John Singleton will be writing, directing and producing a film on the late rapper and hip-hop artist Tupac Shakur. After some lengthy legal battles between Morgan Creek and the Shakur family, they have come to an agreement on the film. Singleton plans to focus on the coming of fame and the murder of the rapper in 1996. Singleton believes that the movie is a must and is determined to create it. This film it important to Singleton because of the friendship that he shared with Shakur and the plans he had to make Shakur a star on the big screen. Single claims that "Tupac was the guy who I planned to do a lifetime of films with… His passing deeply affected my life as well as countless people in this world. His life story is as important to my generation."

John Singleton's determination and perseverance have made him a successful film writer, director, and producer. From his first film Boyz n the Hood to funding the movie Hustle & Flow or being apart of the Fast and Furious series, directing 2 Fast 2 Furious. Singleton has made movies that we all will continue to watch. We're all excited for his up and coming films.
